While recorder is taught as part of the music syllabus at Ferncourt Public School from year 3 to year 6, joining the Recorder ensemble provides additional opportunities for students to grow their recorder skills, perform at school events, and participate in the Festival of Instrumental Music (FOIM).
Recorders are taught by Bonnie Kay, Ferncourt’s music teacher, and there is one rehearsal per week at lunchtime during the school terms. Students who do not wish to join the Festival of Instrumental Music performance at Sydney Opera House are still very welcome to join the group, however they will need to practice at home to keep up with the rest of the group.
From term 4 in year 2 and up.
Students will begin on descant, the highest pitched and smallest recorder, and after they have become proficient on that they can then move to other recorders - the treble, tenor, or bass. Recorders are loaned to students free of charge but must be paid for if damaged or lost.
Recorder practice is held for beginner players in first half of lunch and more experienced players in second half of lunch once a week according to Ms Kay’s schedule.
As rehearsals during school time are very short, recorder players must commit to home practice. They will be given learning materials such as sheet music and recordings to assist. This is sent to parents and will include a link to the materials. Students will be expected to memorise three pieces for performance at the annual Festival of Instrumental Music, performed at the Opera House. Students will need to attend a one day rehearsal in the city, then about a month later a full day rehearsal at the Opera House and evening concert. These excursions are supervised by Ms Kay and a parent volunteer.
The annual fee of approximately $40 is only payable if your student performs in the annual Festival of Instrumental Music. This is optional but is highly recommended.
