Ferncourt has a Training Band and Concert Band. Students will spend approximately a year in Training Band, after which they will need to pass a simple audition to enter Concert Band. The Concert Band is run by renowned band conductor Cathy Chan who started the Ferncourt bands program over 20 years ago. Both bands will be able to perform at school assemblies and other local events.

Students can join Training Band from year 3 and up. No musical experience required to join training band. When they pass their audition, they will move into Concert Band, generally from year 4.

Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Baritone, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion.

To Hire or to Buy?
You may hire instruments from the school or provide your own. In some cases you may find it more cost effective to buy an instrument. Clarinets and flutes are particularly easy to buy second hand. Make sure your second hand instrument is tested or demonstrated before you buy it, and don’t buy Huxley (Aldi brand) or Axiom (Bunnings) instruments!
If you hire a Ferncourt instrument you will be responsible to pay for any repairs resulting from damage such as being dropped. Regular servicing is paid for by Ferncourt P&C.

The best procedure is 1. Take to your tutor 2. Take to the conductor and 3. If it isn’t fixable take it to repairer. The conductor can tell the parent if they are liable due to damage or if it would be covered by regular servicing.
Tutors
Tutors
Students who participate in the Training Band or Concert Band are required to undertake weekly private tuition. This will fast-track their learning by ensuring correct technique is developed and will allow the band to progress as a whole.
Ferncourt has a list of private tutors who teach onsite or externally as arranged directly with the tutor. Please note there are limited spaces at the school.

Students are also welcome to arrange their own tutor from other sources. Please ask if you need help finding a tutor.

Fees
Fees
Band fees are $330 per annum.
Instrument hire $225 per annum.
Weekly Private Tutor Fees range from $30 - $50 per half hour.
