The Ferncourt Strings program is an opportunity for young string players to play together, learn exciting new music, perform, and have fun with friends. Supported by our conductor, students will develop the skills for ensemble playing and grow their musical understanding and confidence in a supportive environment.
All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 can join if they are having private lessons on violin, viola, cello or double bass. Children who are complete beginners will need to take private or group lessons until they are ready to join. Our strings conductor will determine the group to which your child is best suited.
This group is for beginners who are ready to rehearse with a group and perform publicly. Participants must be having weekly private lessons.
This is the more advanced ensemble and where emerging players will progress. They have usually been playing for some time and they must be having weekly private lessons. Some of the more experienced Strings Ensemble students may have the opportunity to participate in the Festival of Instrumental Music.
The strings rehearsals are held every Wednesday morning during the school term:
Emerging players: Wednesday 8.00–8.40am
Strings ensemble: Wednesday 8.40–9.20am
It is very important that your child has the correct sized string instrument. While parents may want to consider purchasing an instrument, many Ferncourt students have rented instruments from North Shore Strings in North Sydney. Doug Cotterill is a violin maker and repairer, and his instrument rental is run by Stephany Rojas Raldes. Together they will help you find an instrument and correct size for your child. For instrument rental, contact Stephany via email or phone: stephany@northshorestrings.com.au or 0412 452 764.
Upon request, the Ferncourt P&C may subsidise the hire of the larger string instruments such as cello and double bass so they cost the same as violin hire.
Strings ensembles fees are $330 per annum.
